A: The world’s most useless mascot :P

Q:What do they do?

A:Once you run the program, they fall from the top of your screen. They will usually stand up and walk around a bit. Sometimes sitting down to relax, or climbing along your monitor sides. They will multiply, sometimes at astounding rates, sometimes not at all. Depending on whom you download, they may grab your browsers and throw them off screen.

Q: I downloaded one of your files, but my computer doesn’t know how to open it.

A: The files have been compressed at .ZIP files, you’ll have to unpack them using compression/extraction programs. You can use 7-zip or WinRar or any other program.

Q: When I click the Shimeji.exe button, nothing happens.

A: This is usually caused by one of five things:

1. Your computer is just being a bit slow; it can take up to 30 seconds for Shimeji to appear.

2. You don’t have (the latest version) of Java.

3. The files were extracted incorrectly. Try extracting all the files again. You may have to re-download the .ZIP file.

4. You haven’t selected an image bank, when the dialogue box comes up make sure an image bank is selected.

5. The shimeji has gotten caught on your internet window. Simply minimize the window and they’ll fall.

Q: When I click the Shimeji.exe button, I get an error message.

A: If you have a 64-bit computer running Windows 7 and up, you have to use the .JAR or .VBS files. The .EXE file doesn’t work at all on new versions of windows. Sorry. Other than that, it will work on every version of windows (though Windows 8 is REALLY PICKY ABOUT IT).

Q: Does it Work on Mac?

A: At this moment no. Mac versions will be request only since I don’t know how to code the Mac versions. They script is in Japanese and I don’t own a Mac. MEGAMAN WILL BE THE ONLY ONE TO ABSOLUTELY HAVE A MAC VERSION (when I get around to coding it)

Q: Will you make _____________?

A: I probably won’t do requests for characters since they are quite a bit of work, over 100 images per shimeji. I will be making them based on character popularity or personal preference.

Q: How do I add another Shimeji?

A: Click ONCE (or multiple times if you want multiple ones) on the taskbar Icon, OR right click, then click “Another One!”.

Q: SO MANY SHIMEJI! HELP!?

A: People have commented that they multiply quickly :D just right click on the taskbar icon and select “Reduce to One!”

Q: There is a black background around my shimeji occasionally. Why?

A: I believe that is a rendering problem when the computer is displaying the images. It has to do with transparency or something. I’ve attempted to fix it, but it’s not going to be perfect, because it doesn’t happen consistently enough.

Q: My buddy just sits around & doesn’t do anything. Is it normal?

A: Typically yes it is normal. It is randomly scripted that way. You CAN throw them around the desktop. They do whatever they want. However, there is a bug in the program that causes them to enter an infinite loop when they are sitting. Just pick them up to reset the coding.

Q: How come my buddy doesn’t throw any windows? / Do they throw Google Chrome or Firefox?

A: Like I said, It’s randomly scripted. You must have your window into a little window and do not make them full screen. The buddy do whatever they want. They don’t typically throw windows OFTEN but it does happen. AND YES they do (or at least Chrome, I don’t have Firefox to confirm for you)

Q: My buddy threw my Window away and I can’t retrieve them! Help?!

A: To retrieve your window back. Go to your task bar and Right Click the icon. Once you have down that, click “Restore IE!”. You’re window will be back to normal.

Q: WHERE IS MY INTERNET WINDOW!?

A: You must have stepped away when they threw it. It’s off screen. You can’t access it now >:D (Refer to previous ask)

Q: Can I have 2 or more buddies at the same time?

A: Yes you can. Any buddy of your choice can be at the same time. The most I had open at once was 20, I believe. It gets VERY crowded though.

Downloadable Shimejis

Shimeji is a free program that creates a small mascot to walk around your desktop, generally causing mischief. You can download the original program here. There is also an english codefork here, if all the Japanese intimidates you.
By replacing the images in the img folder with your own, you can create your own desktop mascots. I wrote a more detailed tutorial on how to do that here. Upon finding this out I immediately started making zombie ones because I have a problem.

TO DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL THESE SHIMEJIS/huawei-drivers-for-windows-7.html.

1. Download the rar of your choice.
2. Double click the downloaded .rar file and a new window should pop up with a 'Shimeji_Hunterzombie1.7' folder. If that doesn't happen, you need an extractor like Winrar or 7zip
3. There should be a button in your program saying something like 'extract to'. Click it, and specify an easy to remember location. This should extract the whole folder to this location (MAKE SURE YOU EXTRACT THE WHOLE FOLDER, NOT JUST THE EXE FILE)
3. Go to the folder and doubleclick shimeji.exe (or shimeji.jar, i heard that works too). The shimeji should fall on your desktop.
4. To remove the program, delete the folder.

If you get an error message in Japanese, your java is not up to date. You can download an update for that here, I've heard. Shimeji is designed to work on Windows, but there have been workarounds made for Macs! You can read more about Mac Shimejis at this page, although be warned, I can't help you too much with this since I don't have a Mac. As far as I can tell though, basically download the Mac template Shimeji, then replace the /conf/ and /img/ folders of the template with the /conf/ and /img/ folders of the Shimeji you want to use.

Shimejis For Microsoft Edge

Once it's running, you'll see a small icon in your taskbar for that shimeji. Right click on that to bring up a menu. Translated, it goes:

1. Spawn a Shimeji
2. Come here!
3. Remove all Shimejis but one
4. Bring back IE screens (They will sometimes throw your browser windows around if they aren't fullscreen, and also MSN messenger I think)
5. Exit

You can also rightclick an individual shimeji and select Baibai to get rid of one at a time.

Hunter was the first shimeji that I made and has a few rough edges here and there as a result. But on the whole I think she came out pretty well, haha.

Her conf files have been specially edited for her. The edits are:

-Two new idle animations (usually triggered when you call her to your mouse, if you aren't seeing them, or when she's on an IE window)
-Two new running animations (one for jogging, one when you call her)
-Fixed her crawling animation
-Fixed some timing things here and there
-Added an extra frame at the beginning of her fall

If you want to see her in action, I recorded a quick video of me playing with her.

Smoker was the second one I made, and is a bit more polished as a result. Like Hunter, her conf files have been specially edited.

-An uneven walking cycle to give her a limp
-A separate running animation
-Extra falling/jumping frames
-An idle animation while standing still and sitting
-Two new idle animations while sitting
-More frames for one of the default sitting animations
-Changed the alignment for her kicking-her-legs animation
-Adjusted crawling/climbing-a-wall frame orders

Unfortunately she's not size-matched to her partner, and they can't interact with each other.

Preinfected Hunter and Smoker are a joint shimeji, and will wander around together. These two have a lot of new animations and extra frames (some 200!) so are much bigger and more complicated than their infected counterparts. Their conf files have been edited quite a bit. They have:

-Unique jogging/running animation
-Extra frames while falling
-Extra frames while landing
-Separate and new tripping animation
-Separate animation after a particular spawn
-New idle animation while climbing an IE window (and sometimes your monitor, reportedly, although they don't do it on mine)
-Adjusted timing on their crawling sprites
-Hanging frame when you pick them up
-Fifteen new idle animations while sitting
-Five new idle animations while standing
-Added animation after throwing an IE window
-Added frames to an existing sitting idle

They can't interact with other Shimejis, but they will definitely interact with each other, haha.I recorded a quick video of what they look like in action.
